Publisher's Synopsis

The final book in the fictional Armstrong Family Trilogy. Ethan Connor is a writer for a Columbus, Ohio newspaper preparing a two part series on his family's history with the Underground Railroad in Ohio. His previous feature articles for Black History Month have left questions unanswered. He sets out with photographer Morgan Dunbar to find the answers for a followup story. Using his family's collection of old letters and research in Alabama, Kansas, and Ohio, he discovers more than he had planned. The slaves his family had helped escape and educate had become successful citizens after the Civil War, serving with the US 10th Cavalry (The Buffalo Soldiers) and earning a teaching degree at Wilberforce University. Their dream of returning to Alabama and teach children with the Freedman's Bureau is thwarted by the failure of the government's Reconstruction Act. In their journey of discovery, Ethan and Morgan learn that the buried treasure they had searched for wasn't the kind of treasure they had envisioned.
