Even at the highest level of the game, good defensive skills are at a premium. The error of 'diving in' too quickly to the challenge is one of the bigger problems coaches face. The rash tackle is rarely successful, with the player in possession stepping over or around, and leaving the challenge behind. Hence the defending team are then outnumbered at the back, not forgetting the giving away of free-kicks and penalties.
