Publisher's Synopsis

One of the characteristics of the state of Amapá is its terrestrial isolation from the rest of Brazil, with integration only with the Guiana Plateau, via the Binational Bridge. The bridge was built over the Oiapoque River, the natural boundary between Amapá and French Guiana, and inaugurated at the end of 2015. Its construction is one of the consequences of the signing of the 1996 Framework Agreement, ratified by Brazil in 1997. Even after its ratification, the border region between Amapá and French Guiana continues to suffer from conflicts of various kinds and magnitudes, with no changes to people's routines. This work was divided into three chapters; the first contextualised the process of defining Amapá's international border; the second sought to conceptualise the importance of international treaties and their influence on the relations between states and society; the third chapter aimed to explain and evaluate the Framework Agreement signed between Brazil and France in 1996 and ratified by Brazil in 1997. This is a work whose relevance and use should not be restricted only to scholars of International Relations and the Legal Area, but to the general public.
