Publisher's Synopsis

The Beaux-Stratagem is a play written by George Farquhar in 1707 and published in 1898. It is a comedy that tells the story of two young men, Aimwell and Archer, who travel to the countryside with the intention of marrying wealthy women. They pose as a wealthy lord and his servant, respectively, in order to gain the trust of the local gentry. Along the way, they encounter a number of colorful characters, including a highwayman, a drunken innkeeper, and a group of country bumpkins. As they attempt to carry out their plan, they find themselves falling in love with the very women they are trying to deceive. The play is known for its witty dialogue, clever plot twists, and satirical commentary on the social mores of the time. It is considered one of Farquhar's greatest works and a classic of English literature. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
