Publisher's Synopsis

The Battle of Life, A Love Story, is a short story written by Charles Dickens and published in 1846. It is the fourth of his Christmas Tales, between Le Grillon du And The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain. The action takes place in an English village located on the site of a historic battle. Some characters refer to the harshness of life by referring to those encountered by the combatants; Of this comparison was born the title of the work. The Battle of Life, a love story is the only one of the Christmas Tales containing no religious or supernatural references. A scene takes place at Christmas time, but it is not capital and does not serve as a conclusion. The story resembles that of the Grillon du foyer in that its decor is not urban and that the conclusion is romantic. The news belongs to the works of Dickens not having enjoyed great popularity, characteristic that it shares with The Haunted Man in the whole dedicated to Christmas. It was adapted for the theater by Albert Richard Smith and, as such, enjoyed some success at the Surrey Theater in 1846.
