Born in Baltimore, Maryland, the author was raised in Baltimore and graduated high school in 1951 from Baltimore City College. Following graduation from the University of Virginia in 1955 with a BA in Economics, he served in the United States Army in the Adjutant General Corps prior to returning to the University of Virginia for graduate studies. In 1959, the author graduated from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia with an MBA in Business Administration. For many years the author's career focused primarily on the restructuring and turnaround of troubled banks in Washington. D.C and the Northern Virginia area. In 1987 and 1988, the author organized, from his attic is Mclean, Virginia, Virginia Commerce Bank (VCB), with initial capital of $6.25 million. VCB grew to assets of $3 billion, 28 branch offices, and subsequently became the largest community bank headquartered in Northern Virginia. In 2014, VCB was sold to United Bank of Charleston, West Virginia, in a tax-deferred common stock exchange for approximately $492 million. The author is the broker/owner of his own real estate and consulting business, Bankers Realty, Inc., and resides in Winter Hill in Falls Church, Virginia.
