Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from The Australian and Californian Gold Discoveries, and Their Probable Consequences; Or an Inquiry Into the Laws Which Determine the Value and Distribution of the Precious Metals

With reference to the nature of the effects Which are likely to be produced by the increased, and increasing, supplies of gold, many popular errors and misconceptions are abroad. To correct these being one of the objects I had in view, I have found it necessary to begin with a statement of elementary principles, and an exposition of the nature and functions of money. This I have eu deavoured to do, in the introductory letters of the series, in such a way as to render the subject intelligible to those who have not previously devoted much of their attention to it, and to Whom the discussions of Political Economy generally are in some measure new.
