Publisher's Synopsis

The earthwork known as Bokerley Dyke, which lies between and forms part of the modern boundary of the counties of Hampshire and Dorset, is an outstanding legacy of the prehistoric landscape. No single county inventory could cover all aspects of the series of ditches, banks and other works which make up the "Bokerley Line", so the Royal Commission has devoted this volume to a thorough treatment of the field surveys, aerial photography, Ordnance Survey drawings and previously published work which throw light on the origins, development and significance of the Dyke.;As well as a thorough investigation of the Dyke itself, monuments in Dorset and Hampshire to its east and west are also considered - including barrows, ditches, enclosures and mounds. The evidence points to an interpretation of the Dyke as a cultural boundary in both prehistoric and later periods.
