After the foregoing summary, it will be necessary to say something about the recent great achievement in the determination of the periods of Scripture by accurately fixing their dates. As in the records of future eclipses they would be worthless without the precision of measurement. the importance of fixing dates. An eminent writer on the prophecies has well remarked that "what has been most perplexing to the students of prophecy has been the great discrepancy amongst interpreters in regard to dates fixed upon for the commencement of those prophecies which are supposed to be of long continuance, and the want of agreement as regards to the time when they are to be fully accomplished." But there have been reasons for this. All our years have been hampered by the use of B.C. and A.D., years 'of varying length, and Protestants, in their zeal to disparage the Church of Rome, have substituted the rise of the Papacy, the French Revolution, or a Napoleon AntiChrist, for the events which are associated with the dates of Scripture. Nevertheless, perplexing as have been the different opinions of men, we ought not to be so prejudiced by them as to preclude all interpretations of later writers, who are able to profit by the errors of others, and who, living alinos't in touch of the great events at hand, may be found able "stewards of the mysteries of God."
