As Principal of the North Lemba Teacher-Training College for Girls in Zaire, Dadou is a pillar of the community. Then an infatuated young student claims maliciously in a suicide note to be pregnant by him, and he becomes an outcast. He begins to neglect his work and takes to drink, his wife commits suicideand his children are murdered by a vengeful mob. Dadou flees Zaire, only to become embroiled in the internecine power-struggle that plagues his refuge in the Congo.
