The Anniversary marks the beginning of the end for laidback, middle-aged primary school teacher, Trevor Littlewood. His ill-conceived choice of wedding anniversary gift to Sarah, his wife, (who is suffering from empty nest syndrome but Trevor is too self-indulgent to realise) is insulting and, frankly, laughable.
Sarah takes off to stay with her parents just as her father is in the throes of selling the family business. He hires a financial wizard - Richard Etherington - to wind up his business affairs and very quickly, Etherington worms his way into Sarah's life too and they embark on a relationship.
Trevor, naturally, is fuming. Not only because his wife has left him but also because she's become embroiled in a relationship with this shady character, and they've only been separated a matter of weeks.
Determined to prove Etherington's a deadly fraudster, despite everyone in the family falling for his silver tongue and wealth-flaunting, Trevor talks his loyal and trusted drinking pals from the pub into playing detective with him.
