Publisher's Synopsis
By the new year of 1813, all thinking men have concluded Bonaparte has been defeated. His army is dead beside the winter road from Moscow. His cavalry has been eaten and his cannon abandoned. Prussian troops are home and the Russian army is in hot pursuit of Bonaparte and keen to take its revenge on Paris. The price to pay for burning Moscow. Paul is sent to London on a delicate mission. But he has forgotten a family shibboleth: 'if the English help you, then you will pay for it.' The problem Paul has ignored is that that he has been helping himself, very freely too, and the English know it. If he escapes the smiling jaws of retribution it will only be because he is alert and thinking. One mistake and he will discover he is very much on his own. If it all goes wrong he has only himself to blame. He is yet to appreciate that he is up against people who can make it 'all go wrong, ' by lifting a little finger. They don't want revenge, they want to trade. But what?
