Julia goes with her sister Fanny and her husband Sir Frederick to Vienna, as governess to their daughters. There, the congress that is to settle the fate of Europe after the Napoleonic wars is gathering. Julia meets Sir Carey Evelegh, who has left his fiancée, Angelica, behind in England, with plans to return for a spring wedding. When Fanny sets off for home, Julia and her maid follow in another coach. But an accident on the way causes Julia to lose all her belongings. Now penniless, and a long way from home, who will help her to resolve her problem?
