Publisher's Synopsis
What does a vintage steamer trunk hide that has attracted two vagabonds from Alaska and others to Whisperwood Retirement Village? The former owner had been brutally murdered, but not for the trunk, and it has disappeared. As the two searchers are killed, Nancy and the 90s Club dredge up Whisperwood's sordid past when it and the abandoned mining tunnels under the building were exploited by criminals. The criminals are in jail, and the tunnels were supposedly filled and blocked, but the 90s Club discovers a part of the tunnel left open, unblocked, and accessible by a hidden door. The 90s club can't pass this up, but when they open the hidden door and shine their lights into the room, they find the brassbound trunk and discover its secret, a stash of jewelry and gemstones, along with other items reported as missing or stolen by Whisperwood residents. Is all of it stolen? Who has been stealing from the residents and hiding the loot in the hidden room? Is the thief also a killer? Thefts from the residents accounts for a small part of the value of the loot. The gems hidden in the trunk must be worth thousands of dollars. Where did it come from? Who owns it? How did it come to be hidden in the trunk? Nancy Dickinson and Whisperwood's 90s Club are determined to find the answers and lay a trap for the killer. Even Nancy's cat Malone plays a part in solving this mystery.
