Publisher's Synopsis

The GBP250 million Thames Water Ring Main is the largest potable water project ever undertaken in the UK. Completed in 1994, the project comprises 80 km of mostly 2.54 m diameter concrete-lined tunnels some 40-50m below the city and eleven major underground pumping stations. It links London's various water treatment works with demand centres across the city stations thus ensuring reliability of supply Thames Water's six million customers. The eight refereed papers in this special issue of ICE Proceedings are written by senior members of the UK project team. They cover project management, route planning and surveying, procurement, tunnel design and construction, planning and design of the Holland Park shaft and overcoming the ground difficulties at Tooting Bec.
