Publisher's Synopsis
Many of the momentous chapters in American history were written in the Lone Star State, from the heroic last stand at the Alamo and the subsequent triumph at San Jacinto, to the successful moon landings of 1969, orchestrated from NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. There have been dark days, too, none more so than the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas on November 22, 1963. The U.S. Army and Navy have established large facilities in the wide-open spaces of Texas at Fort Sam Houston and in Corpus Christi. Two of the nation's greatest warships, the USS Texas and USS Lexington, are permanent reminders of the service Texans have given their country.
Texas Then and Now features the most prominent locations from around the state, comparing vintage photographs with modern views of the same scenes today. Included on these pages are many of the great Texas universities, tourist draws in Austinand Galveston, the historic oil strike at Spindletop, the old stockyards of Fort Worth, the Texas State Capitol in Austin, and the state fairgrounds in Dallas. This collection of Texas landmarks provides a vivid portrait of a dynamic and expanding state-but one that has not forgotten its rich and enduring history.
