Publisher's Synopsis
Orphaned by marauders, young Quinten Tyshan survives as a powder monkey in the ammunition pits, a scout on barren landscapes, and a legionnaire in the armies of New Rome thousands of years in the future. Nicknamed Tenacious for conspicuous bravery, he travels from world to world with the 5th Imperial Legion protecting colonies and suppressing revolts. But when Tenacious runs afoul of a murderous commander, he is condemned to exile.
Hurled into an abandoned sector of space, the former soldier crashes on an uncharted barbarian planet. For a time, he lives alone, cutting out an existence in the wildness while hunting a savage ape-like species that preys on weaker creatures. He is sustained by his unshakeable faith in the gods, particularly Minerva, the goddess of war, justice, and wisdom. Then one day he discovers there are survivors of previous crash landings living along a great river. Though industrious, they lack the military organization needed against the predatory savages, and often fail to respect the gods. With the relentless determination of a Roman legionnaire, Tenacious sets out to reform this new world, and perhaps find a future for himself beyond the sword.
