This book considers Indian television as a cultural form with the specific role of producing Indian popular culture. Using methods developed within the cultural studies tradition, the book conducts a textual analysis of a television serial, the Mahabharat.
The analysis qualitatively examines the serial, concentrating on its signifying practices and narrative strategies specific to television. Conclusions drawn about the state of television in India and its effectiveness in producing a national image are then related to the political, social and cultural movements in India.
