Publisher's Synopsis
Tammy is a 17-year-old girl who lives in a house boat in the swamp in the Mississippi Delta between Louisiana and Mississippi, where she runs around barefoot making friends with the animals in the swamp. A businessman flying his own airplane crash lands in the swamp and Tammy finds him unconscious in the river, so she brings him back to the houseboat where she lives with her elderly grandfather and nurses him back to health.
Soon she sings this Academy Award winning song to him:
I hear the cottonwoods whisperin' above
"Tammy, Tammy, Tammy's in love"
The ole hooty-owl hooty-hoos to the dove
"Tammy, Tammy, Tammy's in love"
Does my lover feel what I feel
When he comes near?
My heart beats so joyfully
You'd think that he could hear
When Tammy's grandfather is arrested for making and selling corn liquor, Tammy goes to stay in the businessman's house where in spite of being presumably near illiterate and backwards, she interferes in a positive way in everybody's life and eventually marries the businessman.
This book was made into three movies and a TV series. The most memorable movie sarred Debbie Reynolds.
