At the beginning of the 18th Century, Britain ships three thousand German immigrants to Upstate New York to produce pitch and tar for its ships. Many perished en route, but those that survive quickly realized that promises made to them were never meant to be kept. This is a generational novel where fictional characters interweave among historical figures who become the statesmen that transform a British Colonial possession into the United States of America.
