Syncopated Rhythmsshowcases an outstanding collection assembled by jazz impresario George Wein and his wife Joyce that represents an excellent survey of the accomplishments of African American artists of the last century. Included are both figurative and abstract works, many with the theme of music and musicians. The book illustrates paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and a painted story quilt. The works were done in the late 1920s through the 1990s and the collection is particularly strong in works of the 1940s to the 1970s. Thirty-five artists are represented, among them Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Miles Davis, Jacob Lawrence, Faith Ringgold, Betye Saar, and Augusta Savage.
