Publisher's Synopsis
The number of elderly people is increasing both in industrialized and in developing countries. In 1986, the Sandoz Foundation for Gerontological Research was created in order to encourage scientists from all over the world to undertake innovative research projects in the field of gerontology. The aim of the Foundation is to promote disciplines which are concerned with the problems of aging, particularly biology, pharmacology, immunology, geriatrics and geriatric medicine and psychiatry. This volume presents the eight 1990 winning studies of the Foundation in Japan, providing new insights and answers to various enigmas related to aging.
