Publisher's Synopsis
In her book the author shares with the reader what life has been like for an African American Southerner who migrated to a Northern city at the end of The Great Migration.
Not knowing anything about what city life would be like, she left her teaching position in Columbia, SC with her newlywed husband, Pelham Jones, to establish a new home in this industrial city, Detroit, Michigan.
She was unaware of all the socio-economic conditions of the city at that time and never envisioned the racist environment she would encounter in employment and housing. She had a completely different vision of the school system. But the author endured the hardships and had the faith that she and her husband could find a good life here, and they did. Her faith, training, hard work and support of family and church friends all contributed to her surviving life in the big city.
For more than 60 years she has met the challenges of raising a family and working in the city and managed to survive the racism and discrimination most African Americans face in America on a regular basis.
