A number of Belgian refugees are employed in Birmingham in the cutting of valuable diamonds, and the effect of this introduction of foreign highly skilled labor is expected to be permanent. The manu facture of fine chain by machinery, which before the war was prae tically a German industry, has been taken up very extensively in this-city.

There was a. Decrease in the export of jewels for watches and meters to the United States from in 1915 to in 1916, but the export of half-pearls and other small stones, not previously shipped from this city, has grown considerably.
