Jane Cleveland and Prudence Bates know each other from Oxford, where Jane was Prudence's tutor. At the age of 41, Jane long ago settled into a stable, if unexciting, life. She is the wife of a vicar who has just been transferred from a suburban parish to a more rural one. Prudence, on the other hand, has yet to have everything figured out. She has neither married or found a job to which she can dedicate all of her energy; although she does work, she feels that the tasks to which she is set are generally beneath her capabilities. In Jane and Prudence, Jane tries to set Prudence up with Fabian Driver, a widower who lives in Jane's parish. The matchmaking goes awry, but in the process, Prudence learns that her life, which cannot be so neatly categorized into one role as can Jane's, may be all the more fulfilling for that very reason. In this manner, the novel critiques the mores and expectations surrounding women in 1950s society. Read more.... Download your copy today! for a limited time discount of only $2.99!
