Gioele era un profeta dell'Antico Testamento, poco si sa della sua vita e della sua storia. Quello che si sa è il nome di suo padre Petuel. Le sue profezie furono pronunciate a Gerusalemme. La sua vita deve essere stata vissuta in Giuda. Non era un sacerdote, ma aveva un vivo interesse per il tempio e per coloro che servivano in esso. Le sue profezie erano rivolte al popolo.
Il libro di Gioele è stato scritto in un periodo sconosciuto. Anche il periodo del suo ministero è messo in discussione. Potrebbe essere stato quando il re Joash (835-796 a.C.) era ancora un bambino. Gioele significa "YHWH è Dio". Profetizza la discesa dello Spirito Santo e collega l'opera di Dio nell'AT alla nascita della Chiesa nel NT. Mostra l'intenso desiderio che Dio ha di mantenere l'intimità con tutto il suo popolo. Gioele li chiamò a rivolgersi a Lui. Egli descrive una piaga di locuste (Gioele 1:1-20) che attaccavano successivamente in stormi di dimensioni spaventose, che divoravano la corteccia degli alberi di fico, i campi di grano, i vigneti e i frutteti, estinguendo il materiale per i sacrifici dei sacerdoti. La piaga è il simbolo dell'ira divina e della sua punizione contro il peccato. I disastri della natura menzionati nel capitolo 1 sono un linguaggio figurato che si riferisce ai nemici stranieri che avrebbero devastato Giuda, qualche esercito invasore, assiro o babilonese (Gioele 2:1-11).
Gli ebrei dovevano fare lutto nel giorno dell'indignazione di Dio, cioè nel giorno del suo giudizio (Gioele 1:13-16). Il profeta menziona più volte il giorno del Signore, cioè il giorno in cui Egli sorge per eseguire il suo giudizio. Tuttavia, non è mai troppo tardi per il pentimento, e viene lanciato un nuovo appello per un culto speciale nel tempio, sia per i sacerdoti che per il popolo (Gioele 1, 13-16 cfr. Gioele 2, 12-17). La devastazione delle locuste sarà poi sostituita dall'abbondanza che il Signore fornirà (Gv 2,18-27) attraverso l'effusione dello Spirito (Gv 2,28-32 - la pioggia precoce e l'ultima pioggia), compiuta nel giorno di Pentecoste (Atti 2,17-21); le manifestazioni della natura possono avere un significato apocalittico (Gv 2,30-32; cfr. Ap 6,12-13). Così, dopo il pentimento verrà la restaurazione del popolo. In Gioele 3,8 il Signore menziona il nome di un popolo, i Sabei, riferendosi ai primi progenitori di un distretto dell'Etiopia. Un'altra citazione interessante è in Gioele 3, 18, dove il profeta parla di una fontana d'acqua che uscirà dalla Casa del Signore e irrigherà la valle di Shittim (o valle delle acacie).
