1.1 General
Foundations are used to transfer the load from the superstructure to the soil underneath without causing excessive
settlement or the shear failure of the soil. The analysis of any
foundation structure is concerned with the determination of the
settlements and their variations across the foundation and the
assessment of induced stresses in the foundation and soil. Therefore,
m the analysis of foundations, it is necessary to know the strength
and deformation behavior of soils. Soil is not a linear elastic
material. The relation between stress and strain is much more
complicated than a simple, linearly elastic response and they show a
great variety of behavior when subjected to different conditions.
