Publisher's Synopsis

This work examines the two methods of interpreting scriptural text - the historical critical method and the French structuralist method. The former looks beyond the text to explore issues of reference and authorial intentionality, while the latter focuses on the inner world of the text. The author juxtaposes an historical critical exegesis and a structuralist analysis of the story of the raising of Lazarus, successfully showing the strengths and weaknesses of both methods.
