Publisher's Synopsis
Pun Songling's Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio is a collection of hundreds of stories written centuries ago. As there are many different stories, there are many different characters. Some of these characters have common themes between stories, however. For example, there's the fox spirit archetype, which often manifests as a mischievous young or middle-aged woman. An example of this is the Dowdy Fox in "The Marriage Lottery." Even though individual characters can have variation, the character of the fox spirit tends to have certain characteristics that you can write about, such as have the supernatural power to change to fit whoever they know in the story. The exact characters that you can write about will change depending on the exact version since there are 400 in the original work, but many modern translations have a little over 100, such as the John Minford translation.
