Publisher's Synopsis

Peter, the seven year old boy next to Sarah's family farm comes to live with her when bandits kill his parents. Reluctant at first, Sarah and Peter grow up to be inseparable. On her eighteenth birthday, Sarah finds a glowing rose in the woods. She and Peter try to hide it on the farm as a shared secret. Sarah's mother finds the rose. Sarah's mother immediately sends the two of them on the run from the supposed witch who planted it. Just before Sarah and Peter leave, Sarah's parents die. While on the run. Sarah must come to grips with ultimately being the reason her parents are dead. The two of them are confronted by a bear, the royal guard, a group of excommunicated knights gone bandits, and Peter being imprisoned by the royal guard. During these events, Sarah finds a side of herself she was never available to explore when she thinks she has to choose between Peter and a new man in her life, Aengus. Peter fights another side of himself that is slowly changing despite his efforts to ignore it. His feelings towards Sarah get tangled in awkwardness, built up anger, and jealousy. Upon facing Lamia, Peter finds out the changes he has been facing as well as the news that his past was a hoax, and his future is complicated. Sarah finds a renewed strength going head to head with Lamia before ultimately defeating her. Once Lamia is dealt with, Peter and Sarah believe they are through with their journey when they arrive home to bury Sarah's parents. Not minutes after they finish burying Sarah's parents, two strangers come for them, telling them of a new peril.
