Edmund Dulac was a British-naturalised citizen, who came to work in London for Pall Mall magazine. It was whilst working as a jobbing magazine illustrator that he joined the London Sketch Club, and there made his most important contacts, first by illustrating the works of the Bronte sisters, before moving into his real forte - children's fairy tales. His work on classics as Arabian Nights made him internationally famous. His gift for characterisation sat alongside his mixture of dreamy, evocative landscapes and sharp character design.
