When Steve Holt was six years old, he and his five siblings were separated and placed into various foster homes. His parents, who were financially and mentally disabled, were unable to care for their children. Steve and his older sister Joann grew up in the Open Door Children's Home orphanage on Leon Street in Rome, Georgia.
