Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Steps Upward

Diana Dinmont, who is to be our heroine, was the daughter Of Heckel Dinmont, a poor day-laborer, whose ancestors came a long time ago from Over the big waters, and claimed their descent from the fear less Huguenots Of the sixteenth century. Those ancestors had come to America with a hope of reli gions freedom, and the leaders of the clan were doubtless men Of great courage and breadth of thought. But there were among them, probably, those of a lower grade, the hewers of wood and the drawers of water for their more noble and enter prising brethren. Be this as it may, the retrogres sion had been swift and sure; and though Heckel Dinmont regularly boasted Of the staunch Hugue not blood that ran in his veins, no one could have suspected so wonderful an ingredient in his nature from anything in his life or character.
