Mi chiedo il perché della nostra continua frenesia? Corriamo sempre e non ci fermiamo neanche un attimo per contemplare ciò che ci circonda. Perché siamo abituati a specchiarci e non riusciamo a vedere più di una semplice immagine riflessa, senza mai scrutare in profondità?
Chi sono io? Cosa ci faccio qui? Dove vado? Da quando siamo coscienti di esistere che non riusciamo a rispondere a questi interrogativi, eppure ognuno di noi se li pone costantemente, soprattutto quando si trova di fronte a sé stesso.
Anche il protagonista di questa storia si fa domande e rischia di trovare alcune risposte nella maniera peggiore, perché nella vita così come nel corso della storia, i periodi migliori arrivano dopo le catastrofi. Eppure sappiamo che non dovremmo mai dare le cose per scontate e che gli elementi più significativi sono i più semplici.
Allora, perché ci sfuggono?
Perché le lancette dei nostri dannati orologi vanno troppo veloci. Basta correre! Prenditi una pausa e guarda il tramonto. Immagina il futuro, scruta l'infinito. Perché quello di oggi non ripeterà mai più gli stessi colori, le stesse luci, le stesse emozioni. Un giorno non ci sarà più un'alba, quindi goditi ogni momento. Quest'istante. Adesso!
Potremmo comprendere lo scopo della nostra esistenza e della continuità attraverso un intermediario, semplicemente esaminando le vicissitudini di un normale padre di famiglia, di uno come noi. Perché osservare qualcun'altro dall'esterno tramite un racconto, ci può aiutare a scrutare meglio nel nostro interiore.
Charles è una guardia forestale che si sforza di mantenere stabili i pilastri della sua famiglia, mentre il resto del mondo si sgretola davanti ai suoi occhi a causa di un avvenimento insolito, inquietante, straordinario. Nessuno si aspetta che la propria vita possa mai subire dei cambi radicali. Odiamo la routine, ma siamo così terribilmente afferrati alle nostre abitudini che non riusciamo a tollerare che a causa di qualcuno o qualcosa, le nostre certezze vengano stravolte, e con loro anche la nostra quotidianità.
Del resto, ogni essere vivente condivide i nostri stessi bisogni primari: nutrirsi, sopravvivere il più possibile, accoppiarsi e perpetuare la specie, anche un microrganismo. Ma quando è sotto minaccia, si sviluppa e si diffonde, proprio come ha fatto la razza umana per sfuggire ai predatori e per inseguire le prede. E la propagazione di una specie minaccia la vita di altri esseri viventi...proprio come facciamo noi da quando abbiamo mosso i primi passi sulla Terra e ci siamo sparsi. Quindi la domanda sorge spontanea: chi è il vero virus?
Il padre di Charles lo sa bene e lancia un terribile monito al figlio. Poi un incontro cruciale con il narcisista Elvis, che costringe il protagonista a mettere in dubbio i propri punti di vista. E ancora l'improvvisa partenza verso la casa nel parco nazionale lontano da tutti e la lezione di vita ricevuta da Malthus, il fiero leader. Infine la presa di coscienza sulla morte come ingrediente vitale per la continuazione della vita.
Riuscirà Charles a salvare la sua famiglia? È tutto ciò che conta, però non bisogna mai sottovalutare il potere della natura. Ma aspetta un attimo! Anche noi siamo natura e una persona che l'ha profondamente studiata e si è posta migliaia di domande è stato Charles Darwin, la cui vita personale e la sua teoria della selezione naturale hanno ispirato questa storia.
