The son of a miner, Max Bentley wants to earn his living as a musician in a dance band in London. Young Tess Trent works in London's West End, its affluence far removed from her respectable home in Hammersmith. Meeting at a Saturday night dance, Tess and Max are instantly attracted, soon discovering they share the same dreams. But Max's ambitions drive them apart. Tess tries to find fulfillment in marriage to another. Then her nineteen-year-old daughter Judy meets and falls in love with a musician and to Tess's horror Max Bentley walks back into her life.
