Publisher's Synopsis
During the Thirty-Years' War among the central powers of Europe, between 1618 and 1648, the Scots on the fringe of Europe were also trying to settle their religious differences. This attempt boiled over into a general civil war in Britain and Ireland between 1638 and 1649, with local episodes continuing well into the 1680s and '90s.;Many monuments to Presbyterian martyrs ("Covenanters") in Scotland still survive from the Restoration (post-1660) persecutions - a large number of peasants and others were massacred over the relatively short period from November 1684 to May 1685. This book provides a gazetteer charting the surviving monuments and links them with a connected narrative of events. It includes maps, OS references, photographs, and transcriptions of epitaphs.
