"This little book first saw the light when it formed the seventh and last of the author's Cuestiones místicas. It was written for the purpose of completing the questions by showing which are the true phases of the progress of the spiritual life that normally figure in the lives of the saints and of great servants of God-however rare, on ac- count of our want of fervor, weakness, and unfaithfulness, some of them prove to be in actual fact among the generality of those who are termed "devout Christians." Such phases thus come to be considered, quite unjustifiably, as extraordinary, whereas they are really, of their own nature, ordinary in the perfect Christian life. As, with this end in view, we had been trying to sum up and synthetize what there was to be learnt of greatest importance concerning prayer, its true progress and ordinary manifestations, it seemed the opportune moment to publish a separate book, under the title of Stages in P
