Mr. President, as the honorable Senator from North Carolina [ml mangum] seems to think but little of the morals of our pioneer population, on account of their honorable trespasses upon the public lands, as he 18 pleased to te1m them, I beg leave to set him right, and to quiet his apprehensions on that subject, by referring to the honorable teatime ny of the Senator from Massachusetts, voluntarily accorded, in behalf of the settlers in the West, shortly after he had made a vlsltt to that country, and when their character, on a like occasion to the present, had been called in question here.
