Publisher's Synopsis

The papers presented in this volume emanate from three sessions on active experiments in space. The topics covered include wave injections from space vehicles and ground transmitters; electron and ion beams; and chemical releases from satellites and rockets. Wave injection from space is currently an active area of research. The transfer of electrostatic energy to the surrounding plasma has been observed with the use of ground based transmitters to study ULF interactions in the ionosphere and magnetosphere.;Electron, ion and neutral beams have been used to excite emissions and waves in the upper atmosphere. Beam experiments are reported in this volume and future studies of stratospheric explorations are proposed. The USA NASA/DOD Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite spacecraft provided the platform for a wide range of chemical release experiments. Studies of critical ionization velocity, diamagnetic cavities, plasma structures and waves observed during the CRRES mission, are fully reported.;A wide diversity of active experiments is apparent within these proceedings and the foundation is prepared for the use of new ground-based and satellite facilities using perturbational techniques in future.
