India and Vietnam have been the two major foci of Soviet diplomacy in Asia in the past 30 years. Relations with India indicate success in building substantial links between a communist superpower and a poor parliamentary democracy. Relations with Vietnam are important for examining links between the leading communist powers and a significant Asian communist power, which has played an prominent part in one of the most dramatic conflicts since World War II. Relations between India and Vietnam are also interesting for revealing successful diplomacy between a pluralist democracy and a centralized communist system within the Asian continent.
