With Sterling Byrd dead and a mound silver from his bounty, the Harney brothers are nearly able to open their portal and return to their home world. That is, if they can locate the second half of their conduit, which Sterling seems to have passed on to an unknown source. Despite knowing she can't leave with them, Jae Oldridge can't bring herself to part from the Harney boys. Her bond with the gang-especially Halston-grows stronger by the day. When reformed spirit Jem offers to help them locate the missing part of the conduit, their travels thrust them into a new and monumental adventure. Their journey brings them to the Hespyrian Outlands, where they encounter the magical Nefilium, otherworldly beasts, and a town full of ghosts. The monstrous entities and Rangers patrolling the Outlands aren't the only dangers the gang must face-a mysterious masked man continues appearing on their travels... and he seems hell-bent on capturing Halston.
While each member of the gang seeks a reunion with those they lost, they soon learn that a greater evil may be at stake. Jae and the gang discover that they are ensnared in a battle that will threaten everything they hold dear. They will stop at nothing to reach their journey's end-if the monsters don't destroy them first.
