Richard's school-days were cut short at the age of sixteen when he was sent to this country to the care of an uncle, but where he soon began an independent career, te lying entirely upon his own efforts for sup port.
His mother, a sweet and gentle creature, was the daughter of a Lieutenant Harries Of the Navy. Her brother - In-law had a posi tion in the Navy Yard at Portsmouth, and Richard's greatest delight was to take his vacations with this uncle. Thus at an early age he became familiar with the war vessels stationed there and much of the routine of the Royal Navy; one of his uncles was also an Officer on the ship that conveyed Napoleon to St. Helena.
