Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Some Great Stories and How to Tell Them

MY first interest in the subject of this little book was awakened years ago when as a sophomore I studied literature in college. It seemed to me then that the stories in the reg ular course in English literature, as stories if divested of philology and the many critical notes, could be made of primary interest to young people. The idea impressed me so much at the time, that I wrote to both an editor and a publisher confiding in them my idea, but received little encouragement. I dropped the idea until a few years later when I was teach ing a little village school. Then I had an op portunity of making an actual test of the stories with the children, and this experience is given in one chapter of this book.
