A word of explanation concerning these precious old books may be in order here. In former times the books and papers kept by public officers were retained by them, at the close of their official terms, as their private property. It is not known just how these books were handed down, but the Journal, the most important, was discovered in the possession of Dr. John Gilbert, of Boston.
