This work is the product of a conference held by the Indo-Dutch Programme for Alternatives in Development in Delhi during October 2001. Editors Lietan (University of Amsterdam), Srivastava (economics, Nehru University), and Thorat (Center of Regional Development, Nehru University) provide an introductory essay, which is followed by 13 contributions from 31 contributors including from activists as well as international policy makers.
