Publisher's Synopsis

Shift-workers sleep less than day workers. They also have more problems getting to sleep and, once asleep, staying that way. Challenged by the normal cycle of urban life, and resisted by the natural rhythms of the body, the shift-work cycle represents a violation of a centuries-old pattern of day and night. This book reveals that South African shift-workers sleep less than their overseas counterparts, and poor transport and housing conditions add to this burden.;Women in particular have to deal not only with the resistance of the body to unnatural time, but also with the tyranny of social norms which require housework and child care to be squeezed into their already disturbed daily rhythms.;The book has its origins in a research project commissioned during 1986 by the Tyre and Rubber Co-ordinating Council of the (then) Federation of South African Trade Unions at a time when shift-work first became an issue of major concern. It should be of equal interest to business managers, trade unionists and health and social workers in industry.
