Excerpt from Sketch of the Military Service of Major General Wager Swayne: Delivered at Meeting of the New York Commandery of the Royal Legion, February 4th, 1903
General Wager Swayne entered the service of the United States as Major of the Forty-third Ohio Infantry, August 3ist, 1861, at the age of twenty-seven years. He devoted his time from his entrance to the service until February Ist, 1862, at Camp Andrews, Mount Vernon, Ohio, and other places in the State, in the recruiting and organizing of this regiment.
