Shreve has been visiting an old lady, Zelda, as part of her schoolwork. Zelda loves her car, though she is way past being allowed to drive it anymore. It reminds her of something special in her past. Shreve is used to Zelda's little oddities and the two of them trust each other. So when Zelda's son turns up and tells Shreve she's no longer wanted or needed Shreve is not happy, and then Zelda secretly asks her for help and is obviously distressed. On top of that, Shreve keeps seeing this young girl hanging around who disappears too quickly to be real. A ghost story with a difference, full of misunderstandings and assumptions. A strong novel from a writer who has been mentored by Joy Cowley for many years.
