Publisher's Synopsis

Sharks are a type of fish - animals that swim in water. There are many different types of sharks, from very small to huge. Most sharks live in salty ocean water, but some live in fresh water in rivers. A shark has a skeleton made of cartilage, which is lighter than bone and makes the shark able to float. The ability of cartilage to bend makes it easier for a shark to swing its tail from side to side so it can swim fast. A shark's skin is covered with tooth-like scales that make the skin feel like sandpaper. Sharks have lots of sharp teeth and some sharks have more than one row of teeth. Most sharks eat fish, squid, and shrimp. Some eat seals and even other sharks. Some sharks lay eggs that hatch into baby sharks, while other sharks give birth to live babies. Sharks don't hunt humans, but some types of sharks will bite if people get too close. It is important to stay out of water where sharks swim. Sharks are an important part of ocean life and need to be protected.
