There are over 400 species of sharks in the world's oceans and range in size from the 2-foot pygmy shark to the 50-foot whale shark. Most species live in salt water but a few can exist in fresh water lakes and rivers. Perhaps the best-known species is the great white shark, central to the "Jaws" movie series. Many species of sharks are either endangered or threatened due to overfishing and water pollution decimating their food chain as well as by catch fatalities. Fossils of early shark species have been found that date to about 420 million years ago. Most sharks are carnivorous and have specialized teeth and mouths for feeding. The great white shark is the most dangerous shark since it leads the list of unprovoked attacks on humans, followed by the tiger shark and the bull shark.
